TG history in Central Ohio is focus of evening panel

by Shane Morgan

Columbus-TransOhio kicked off the month of Pride with their second annual Trans Ohio Unity Picnic, held on Sunday, June 1 at Goodale Park in the Short North of Columbus.

It will, however, be far from the last you will see of TransOhio this month.

On Wednesday, June 11, Stonewall Columbus, the Center on High will be hosting a panel discussion called "The History of the Transgender Community in Central Ohio." It is the second panel discussion examining GLBT history in the region.

The panel will discuss the experiences of the transgender community in Ohio with a historical focus on the issues surrounding the personal discovery of gender identity, relationships, politics and community resources and advocacy.

Panel members include Meral Crane of the Gender Diversity Program of Central Ohio, Shane Morgan, Stephanie-Singer and· Dawn Marie Stansbery.

The 2007 TransOhio Unity Picnic.

The discussion begins at 7 pm. The panel is sponsored by Stonewall Columbus, the Gay Ohio History Initiative, Our Stories: A Developing Record of Gender Identity, Sexual Orientation and Alliance at Ohio State University and the OSU GLBT Alumni Society.

On Saturday, June 28, TransOhio will be at Columbus Pride. They will have a booth at the Bicentennial Park with information about TransOhio and resources for the Ohio transgender community.

Additionally, it'll be an opportunity for people from all over the state to meet others in the transgender community. Plus, you'll be able to get up-to-date information about the Trans Ohio Transgender and Ally Symposium, which was rescheduled from March to August 22-24 because of the March snow. For more information about TransOhio and TransOhio community events, visit www.transohio.org.
